Abstract:
Heterogeneous catalysis for thermochemical processes often proceeds at conditions (temperature, pressure) where there is considerable mobility of the atoms in the solid phases, especially metals. The temperature, the reactant/product composition, and even the dissolution of species in the solid matrix hence determine to a large degree the state of the active surface, which then responds dynamically to changes in the (local) environment. The author has worked in surface science and catalysis with reactions proceeding over Co (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), Pd (catalytic combustion), and Ag (methanol oxidation to formaldehyde, including relevant sub-reaction systems), and also with Pd alloy membranes for hydrogen permeation. The presentation seeks to summarize the different dynamic phenomena observed during adsorption, reaction, and permeation, and their implications to catalysis.
