Prof. Dr. Ninan Abraham
Monday, November 20, 2023, 5:00– 6:00 pm
University of British Columbia, Canada
Topic:
The angel complex is the comfortable self-perception that we are doing better than we truly are. This talk specifically examines this disconnect in the sciences in Canada, interrogating who belongs in its ranks. This was done using a data-centered approach in the UBC Faculty of Science to assess faculty hiring equity. It will examine the existing state of the racial and gender diversity gap amongst our faculty, examine the evidence of persistent racial bias in academia and suggest ways to ensure a culture shift in practices.
Learning Objectives:
1.Systemic racism is not an abstraction, it exists in the hallways of UBC.
2.Whether in employment equity or health equity, data collection is a means not the end.
3.Collecting disaggregated demographics (such as census subgroup identifiers) is crucial to unveil inequitable processes and outcomes.
